Tips for Using a Baby Dummy Safely

Dummies (or pacifiers) are tiny lifesavers that soothe crying babies and give exhausted parents a much-needed breather!

While dummies can be a real comfort tool, it’s important to keep your babies safe and be mindful of a few things when you use them.

Here are some practical tips for using a baby dummy, safely.

Choose the Right Dummy

Not all dummies are created equal. Look for ones that are really high quality to ensure your baby is not exposes to toxins. Orthodontic dummies are great as they are gentler on your baby’s developing mouth. Read more on how to choose a dummy.

Keep It Clean

Dummies spend a lot of time in and out of little mouths and hands. Sterilise new ones before the first use, and regularly clean them with hot, soapy water. Store in a clean container like these to avoid germs.

Use Dummy Chains Sensibly

Never tie a pacifier around your baby’s neck or attach it with string or ribbon. It might seem handy, but it can be a strangulation hazard. Instead, use dummy chains or clips with short, baby-safe straps. Do not use the chains or clips when baby is sleeping.

Check for Wear and Tear

Give the dummy a once-over each day. If you see cracks, tears, or weak spots, it’s time to toss it. Even a small break could be a choking risk. Store in a cool, dry place to avoid deterioration (not in the car!)

Use the Right Dummy

Dummies come in different sizes based on age. Using the right size helps ensure it fits properly and reduces the risk of it becoming a choking hazard. Your baby should be able to suck on the dummy unassisted and spit it out when needed

Don’t Dip It in Anything Sweet

Old-school advice might suggest dipping it in honey or juice to calm your baby—but skip that. It’s not only bad for baby teeth but honey can be dangerous for babies under one year.

Know When to Say Goodbye

Dummies are a great tool, but eventually, they outlive their purpose. Most pediatricians recommend weaning off by around age two to avoid issues with speech and dental development.

When should you replace a dummy?

More often that you would think! Look to the brand you have purchased for their specific recommendations. Some say 4-6 weeks and others say 2-3 months.

BIBs dummies recommend replacing dummies if:

  • the latex nipple changes size or shape too much. Keep a new dummy to compare with and you will know when it is time.
  • if the latex nipple starts to get sticky or darkens too much, it is a sign that the material is ageing and needs replacing.
  • there is any sign of damage, weakness or bite marks in the nipple material. Inspect daily for these signs.

You can do a dummy pull test regularly to know when to replace. Simply pull on the dummy teat hard, in all directions and then pull on the handle and ring to see if there are any issues.

At the end of the day, dummies can be a parent’s best friend, as long as we use them wisely. Keep these tips in mind when choosing and using a dummy for your little one!
